January 15-18, 2009 – MLK weekend
Thurs 6:30 dinner thru Sun lunch
$455

When those who identify as gay or bisexual Christian men gather, we bond as a brotherhood based on our unique experiences on the frontlines of sexuality, spirituality, social justice, and HIV/AIDS. How we bond with other men and how we bond with God will be celebrated in presentations, small groups, worship, optional workshops, free time, socials, meals, a “fish bowl” of a few volunteers telling their stories, a talent show (so bring your jokes, poems, songs, instruments, costumes, etc,), and a closing Sunday Eucharist.

Of the up to 100 men who attend this annual event, half are new and half are regulars, half are Roman Catholic and half are Protestant, most are from the U.S. but some come from Canada, most are lay people but many are clergy, most are single or coupled, but some are heterosexually married, most are middle aged or older but some are young, most are gay but many are bisexual. Everyone is friendly or wants to be—don’t worry if you’re shy or introverted or new to it all! We laugh a lot, but we also enjoy the intimacy of sharing some of our deepest feelings and faith. We are a wide range of Christians, from progressives to conservatives.

Rev. Elder Jim Mitulski was raised Roman Catholic and still attends mass on a regular basis, even as he serves the denomination of Metropolitan Community Churches as a Regional Elder, with a portfolio that includes Theological Education and Ecumenical and Seminary Relations. His co-leader, Chris, thinks he’s the finest preacher in America. As pastor of MCC San Francisco for 15 years during the height of the AIDS crisis there, he officiated at more than 500 funerals, accompanying many of the men from diagnosis onward as their pastor. He nearly died himself of AIDS, and tells an extraordinary story of faith. Jim has a B.A. in religion from Columbia University, an M.Div. from the Pacific School of Religion (on whose board of trustees he presently serves), an honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology from Starr King School for the Ministry (Unitarian), and he was a Merrill Fellow at Harvard Divinity School. His family includes two other men and four cats: Calvin, Luther, Zwingli, and Cranmer.

Rev. Chris Glaser has most recently created two curricula for the Human Rights Campaign: a study guide for the film “For the Bible Tells Me So,” and a study guide on “Gender Identity and Faith.” He has published ten books, including “Uncommon Calling: A Gay Christian’s Struggle to Serve the Church,” first published 20 years ago this year, and more recently, “Coming Out as Sacrament.” He often leads men’s spirituality retreats, and has been a Presbyterian activist for 35 years. He has a B.A. in Religious Studies and English Honors from California State University, Northridge and an M.Div. from Yale Divinity School. A native Californian, he has lived in Atlanta, Georgia for 15 years, where his family includes his partner and a dog named Hobbes.
