Light, throughout our human quest for the divine, is the representation for spiritual awakening, for hope, for enlightenment, for transcendence to a higher awareness. Photography is writing with light, a method of recording a myriad of life’s moments. Gently mixing spiritual light with natural light creates an entirely fresh vision of one’s surroundings. By opening a new pathway, photography becomes a channel for personal meditation on peacefulness and oneness.

My world is Light.  We are celestial beings.  Standing beneath the Milky Way’s millions of sparkling lights scattered thickly across the night sky, I ponder the thought, “From the heavens came the substance that makes me!”  We are lights of the universe.  We came from and return to our special star, so believed a sect of Gnostic Christians.

One’s illumination should flourish unrestricted by setting. The connection I experience wandering city streets or in the wilderness with camera in hand are similar, both inspired.  It’s the creation of a sacred space regardless of where we find ourselves.

Kirkridge provides a majestic setting for exploring and capturing visual quietude.  Our sessions will be conducted both indoors and outdoors, as a group, and one-on-one.  Time will be devoted to discussing images of other photographers, as well as my own work plus sharing each other’s photos taken at Kirkridge. A printer and photo paper will be available to create prints from your digital flashcard.

For Jonathan, photography is more than a profession; it is a way of life.  A freelancer for 34 years, Jonathan has taught introductory and advanced courses in photography for the University of New Mexico’s Continuing Education program, the Ghost Ranch Conference Center, and his studio.  His photography is published globally.  Following 32 years in New Mexico, he recently resettled in Sagamore Hills, Ohio and continues teaching journaling and photography.

Upper Room Books in Nashville selected Jonathan to illustrate their annual 272 page engagement calendar/journal – Journeying Through the Days – 2009 edition.  In addition to the cover, 58 black & white and color images grace the interior.  He also wrote the introduction.   The calendar is available in the Kirkridge bookstore.
