Light To Read By

Charles Rice
Jan 30-Feb 1, 2009
Thurs 6:30 dinner thru Sun lunch
Cost $325
Once more this winter we will gather at Nelson Lodge for Light to Read By, our 23rd retreat. Informal conversations around the fire, plenty of free time, meals together, simple worship, and Music with Quiet make for an inspiring weekend that brings us together year after year.
This year we are reading two novels, John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath and Ann Patchetts Bel Canto. The five short stories are in Faith Stories, edited by C. Michael Curtis (pp.1-37, 254-258). The poets are Elizabeth Bishop and Richard Wilbur.

The Light to Read By Fund continues to grow, now at about $8,000. We hope to raise twice that amount for the new gateway at Kirkridges main entrance. This project will incorporate the memorial to Jane Bone Nelson, the motif of lanterns, and a lighted kiosk which will direct those on retreat even after dark. The handsome gate of timbers and stone has been designed by Lynn Robbins, and bids have been solicited.
This seems an appropriate gift of thanksgiving for almost twenty five years of learning and fellowship which we have enjoyed together. There are more than fifty of you who have been part of Light to Read By, and we are hoping that everyone can participate at some level.
Looking forward to seeing you,
Charles Rice
